Schreiner: Ford can’t escape the housing crisis he created

July 8, 2025

QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens leader Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to recent reports from the Missing Middle Initiative on the scale of the housing crisis.

“The Ford government cannot spin its way out of the housing crisis because the numbers don’t lie. Ontario is facing the worst housing downturn since 2009, and things just keep getting worse.

Housing starts in 2025 are flatlining across the province, with Toronto and the GTA hit hardest: down nearly 60% in the City of Toronto and 30% across the wider GTA. This follows historically low starts in 2024, compounding what was already a dire situation.

The result? A whole generation of young people wondering if they will ever find a home, record numbers of people experiencing homelessness, and a $6.6 billion hit to government revenue.

The housing crisis will only get worse if the Premier continues to say NO to legalizing gentle density and missing middle housing; NO to government-funded deeply affordable non-profit, co-op and supportive housing; and NO to protecting renters.

While the housing market collapses, Doug Ford is focused on massive, unrealistic projects that do nothing to address the everyday needs of Ontarians, from oil and gas pipelines to a private luxury spa and a highway tunnel no one asked for.

What we need are more homes people can afford, built faster, in the right places.”
