Doug Ford Looks to Saudi Arabia as he funnels billions into dirty gas
July 7, 2025
GUELPH — Ontario Greens leader Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to Premier Ford’s joint announcement with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith on new pipeline infrastructure:
“Doug Ford’s latest announcement marks a dangerous escalation in his fossil fuel agenda. He’s committing billions in public dollars to pipelines and gas infrastructure that will lock Ontario into expensive, polluting energy for decades.
With Bill 5, Ford has already begun attacking Indigenous rights, dismantling democratic safeguards, gutting environmental oversight, and sidelining communities. Now he’s aligning Ontario’s future with that of an authoritarian petro-state.
This plan isn’t about supporting workers or building resilience. It’s a massive, taxpayer-funded giveaway to oil and gas companies at a time when global investors are directing over $2 Trillion dollars to the green energy transition this year alone.
Climate change is already driving up the cost of healthcare, infrastructure, and emergency response, and Ford’s plan will only deepen that crisis.
His push to “cut red tape” is code for removing public input, undermining Indigenous rights, and fast-tracking projects that harm people and the planet.
Ontario has the tools and talent to lead the clean energy, and to invest in renewables, efficiency, and a green economy that lowers costs and creates lasting jobs with good paycheques. But instead of securing a livable future, Ford is dragging us backwards.
The Ontario Greens will keep fighting for a future that is democratic, climate-resilient, prosperous and built for people, not pipelines.
