Ontario Greens Call for Urgent, Bold Action as New Reports Paint Grim Picture for Renters and Prospective Homeowners

June 20, 2025

QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens leader Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to a new report from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and Royal Lepage’s 2025 renter report.

“Ford’s failure to address the housing crisis is driving the affordability crisis in Ontario.

This government is falling far behind its target of building 1.5 million homes by 2031. The latest CMHC report confirms just how wide the gap has become: to meet the projected demand of 2.2 million homes and return to 2019 affordability levels by 2035, Ontario needs to more than double its efforts to reach 480,000 new housing starts annually.

Meanwhile, Royal LePage’s 2025 Renters Report highlights just how dire things have become for Ontarians trying to keep a roof over their heads. Nearly 40% of renters are cutting back on groceries to make ends meet. Over one in five are taking on credit card debt, and another 21% are juggling second jobs. Alarmingly, 38% are spending more than 30% of their income on rent.

Ontario is facing one of the worst housing supply and affordability crises in Canada, but under the Ford government, it’s still business as usual.

We need urgent, bold action now to close the housing gap and make homeownership a realistic goal for all Ontarians.
