Ontario Greens’ demand a budget that builds homes, creates good jobs, and protects the people and places we love

May 13, 2025

QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens leader and MPP for Guelph, Mike Schreiner, outlined the Party’s priorities for the upcoming provincial budget.

“Ontarians are struggling right now. Skyrocketing costs, growing economic anxiety, and the threat of an escalating Trump trade war are making life harder by the day,” said Schreiner. “In this budget, we’re calling on the government to invest in protecting the people and places we love, making sure people have affordable homes, access to healthcare and job security.”

The Ontario Greens are urging the government to make bold, responsible investments that build a more resilient, affordable, and sustainable province. Greens are calling for budget priorities that tariff-proof Ontario by creating jobs, boosting local manufacturing and food production, and supporting workers through increased funding for education, training and sustainable innovation, not reckless deregulation.

Budget priorities include:

  • Building affordable, climate-friendly homes in the communities people want to live in, close to family, shops, and transit – not on the Greenbelt or farmland. Legalize more types of housing; protect renters; financially support deeply affordable non-profit, coop and supportive housing; and create good-paying construction jobs where people live.
  • Protecting Ontario’s farmland and the places we love by halting sprawl and preserving farmland and natural heritage. Climate and economic resilience starts with standing up for the nature that protects us, and the farms that feed us.
  • Strengthen systems of care by expanding access to community-based mental health and addictions care and pushing back against American-style privatization. Ontario needs real investment in nurses, hospitals, home and community care, and long-term care homes that are available when and where people need it – without barriers.
  • Investing in made-in-Ontario renewable energy like wind, solar, and storage to lower bills, cut pollution, and create clean jobs. Ontario must end its dependence on expensive, imported American gas and create good jobs right here in Ontario.

“We can’t stimulate a thriving economy if people can’t find a home, access a hospital, or afford basic necessities,” Schreiner added. “This is our chance to choose a better path – one that puts people and the planet first.”

The Greens are ready to work across party lines to build a future where Ontarians can thrive in safe, affordable communities powered by clean energy and supported by strong public services.
