Schreiner calls for urgent support for workers impacted by layoffs and tariff pressures
May 2, 2025
QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner issued the following statement in response to this morning's announcement of layoffs and a temporary shut down at General Motors’ Oshawa plant:
“Today’s announcement from General Motors in Oshawa comes on the heels of hundreds of layoffs set to hit workers in Thunder Bay this spring. This devastating wave of job losses threatens the livelihoods of thousands of workers and families across Ontario.
This latest news reinforces recent warnings from the Financial Accountability Office predicting record unemployment and an impending recession.
Ontario needs urgent action. We must work together to fight hard to save these jobs.
The Ontario Greens are calling for strong, targeted investments in the upcoming May 15 budget to support workers – particularly those in the auto sector and industries disproportionately affected by US tariffs.
We urge the Ford government to prioritize real support for working families and communities who are bearing the brunt of US tariffs.”
