Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner applauds early milestone for youth litigants fighting for climate justice in Ontario courts.

QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner released the following statement following news that the Supreme Court has ordered the Ontario government back to the Ontario Superior Court in the Ontario v. Mathur case, where seven young people challenged the Ford government’s 2018 decision to adopt weaker climate targets as a breach of their Charter rights.
“I absolutely understand why young people are furious that the Ford government has failed to address the climate crisis, and is in fact making it worse.
Especially when we just saw last summer that floods in the GTA cost $1.3M/hour. Central Ontario was hit by an ice storm that left people without power for weeks, and now another storm has left parts of eastern Ontario in the dark.
Extreme weather events are only going to become more frequent and destructive, and the government is doing nothing to prepare Ontario for this.
I’m inspired to see young people standing up for a livable future — their future — and holding this government accountable for its role in fuelling the climate crisis.”
