Ford government is risking Ontario jobs when we need them most
April 30, 2025
QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to this morning’s Financial Accountability Office (FAO) report on the potential impacts of US Tariffs on the Ontario Economy:
“This morning’s report from the Financial Accountability makes it clear: the unjust Trump tariffs put Ontario at risk of losing tens of thousands of jobs over the next year.
Premier Ford says we need to wait and see. But Ontarians can’t afford to wait. We need to act now to protect jobs, strengthen our economy, and secure our future.”
The report estimates that US tariffs could cost Ontario 68,100 in 2025 and a further 119,200 jobs in 2026. By 2029, the province could be down nearly 138,000 compared to a no-tariff scenario. The report also warns of rising inflation, which will put even further pressure on the affordability challenges Ontarians are facing.
Yet the Ford government continues to pave over the farmland that feeds us, supports jobs for one in nine Ontarians, and contributes more than $50 billion annually to Ontario’s economy.
If we want to tariff-proof our economy, we must start by protecting the farmland that underpins our food sovereignty and helps keep food prices affordable.
We also need bold investments in clean industries that create good, green jobs – not continued investment in dirty energy that relies on American fracked gas.
