MPP Clancy demands accountability for Waterloo Catholic District School Board trustees
April 29, 2025
QUEEN'S PARK — In question period today, Ontario Greens Deputy Leader and MPP for Kitchener Centre Aislinn Clancy demanded accountability for trustees of the Waterloo Catholic District School Board. She posed her question to the Minister of Education, following an unanswered letter she sent on the topic to the Minister in March.
“Yesterday evening, queer advocacy groups, indigenous community members, concerned students and staff, and members of the Kitchener-Waterloo community came together to stand up to hate. Some trustees of the Waterloo Catholic District School Board, have been trying to ban the Pride flag, 2SLGBTQ books and other symbols of inclusion even including the Every Child Matters flag,” said Clancy. “The actions and behaviours of these trustees, many of whom were appointed – not elected, go far outside their role.”
Clancy highlighted that the Board has spent over 200,000 dollars on legal fees in the past 2 years, including to silence opposing trustees.
“Their tactic is to pursue code of conduct charges to keep elected trustees from voting, speaking and attending meetings as a way to suppress equity, accountability and transparency. This divisive style of American politics does not belong in Ontario schools,” said Clancy.
MPP Clancy posed her question to the Minister of Education, “Will you intervene and stop these trustees who are wasting money and time fighting about what books are in libraries and what flags are on poles?”
