Schreiner highlights Ontario Greens’ plan to tariff-proof the North at the 2025 NOMA conference & AGM

April 23, 2025

THUNDER BAY — Speaking to delegates at the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association’s 2025 conference & AGM, Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner called for tariffing-proofing Ontario’s North.

“Innovation will be key to navigating the ongoing trade war with the US.

We need innovation that uses resources wisely and sustainably and that taps into the talented and trained workforce we have in communities across Ontario.

It will be key for Ontario’s economy that we unlock critical resources in mineral rich sites, like the Ring of Fire – but we need to do so in a way that prioritizes environmental due diligence and engages in meaningful consultation and consent with First Nations.

The Ford government calls these processes “red tape”, but the Ontario Greens know that this is how we protect the people and places we love.

Now is the time to invest in made-in-Ontario renewable energy to create good, clean jobs for Ontarians – ones that don’t rely on American imports or dirty energy.

We need a government that will invest in caring for each other as part of its efforts to tariff-proof Ontario’s North. We can’t stimulate a thriving economy if people can’t find affordable homes, if rural and remote emergency departments are closing due to lack of staff and funding, and if communities are unsupported while managing the overlapping crises of poverty, mental health, addictions, and homelessness.

The Ontario Greens are prepared to work across party lines to get Ontario through these tough times together, because we know that our strength is in unity. But make no mistake: we will continue to hold the Ford government accountable, and fight every day for a healthier, fairer, greener future for all Ontarians.”
