Ontario Greens encouraged by court decision to pause Ford’s bike lane removals pending constitutional challenge
April 22, 2025
QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens Deputy Leader and MPP for Kitchener Centre Aislinn Clancy released the following statement in response to Justice Paul Schabas’ decision to reverse the previous court ruling that would have allowed the province to rip out stretches of Toronto bike lanes before a final ruling on the constitutional challenge launched by Cycle Toronto.
“We’re encouraged to see that due process is being upheld in the important constitutional challenge initiated by Cycle Toronto.
Tearing out bike lanes would make commuting more dangerous for cyclists and do nothing to ease traffic congestion. Our communities need more dedicated bike and transit lanes that help them get where they need to go safely. And they need homes they can afford close to family and work.
Scrapping bike lanes would also increase emissions at a time when we should be doing everything possible to reduce pollutions and combat the climate crisis.
We urge the Ford government to reconsider this misguided approach, which threatens public safety and fails to address the real issues facing Toronto commuters – we need more safe and affordable options for getting around.
We hope the final ruling on this challenge will reflect the need to protect active transportation infrastructure.”
