Ford uses ongoing trade war to justify destroying Ontario’s environment

QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner held a press conference to respond news the provincial government plans to further weaken Ontario’s environmental assessment process as a part of the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act:

“Doug Ford is using Trump’s trade war to justify further weakening the environmental assessment process and Indigenous consultation in Ontario. Let me be clear: protecting the people and places we love is not red tape.

Environmental assessments and Indigenous consultation are essential processes that protect the land, water, and communities that depend on them.

Ford’s government wants to fast track mining, infrastructure, and landfill projects without rigorous environmental scrutiny or meaningful consultation with Indigenous communities – putting Ontarians’ health and safety on the line, and jeopardising relationships with First Nations.

Ontarians deserve a government that protects the people and places we love.”
