Throne Speech Reveals Ford’s Troubling Agenda for Ontario’s Future

April 15, 2025

QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to this afternoon’s throne speech from the government:

The Ontario Greens remain committed to working with the government and other opposition parties to ensure Ontario remains resilient to US tariff threats. Our government works better when we work together.

However, the direction outlined in today’s throne speech is deeply concerning.

What we heard today is not a real plan to tariff-proof Ontario. Ford’s vision for the next four years includes reckless spending and gutting environmental protections. Spending billions on pipelines and tunnels under highways won’t make life more affordable for Ontarians. We need housing, not wasteful tunnels and highways.

We need bold investment in made-in-Ontario, renewable energy solutions, not deeper dependence on expensive, polluting fossil fuels – including American gas.

Ford’s plan sets us on the wrong path for the next four years. Fast-tracking mineral extraction without proper consultation, and paving over farmland and wetlands is not how we build a better Ontario.

We need a real plan to tackle the housing and affordability crisis—one that puts people first, not land speculators and developers. We must protect our $50 billion food economy by halting sprawl and preserving the farmland that feeds us and the natural places that we love.

Ontario deserves leadership that invests in what matters: homes people can afford, energy that doesn’t degrade the environment, and a future we can actually look forward to.
