MPP Clancy calls on Minister of Education to step in on proposed WCDSB Pride Flag ban

KITCHENER — Aislinn Clancy, Ontario Green Party Deputy Leader and MPP for Kitchener Centre, penned a letter today to the new Minister of Education calling on him to step in regarding the Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB)’s motion to ban Pride Flags at WCDSB schools.

“Minister, Ontario’s education system is publicly funded and must be inclusive of all students,” Clancy wrote to Minister Calandra. “I urge you to intervene and stop this overreach of power and erosion of democracy. “

“This motion is homophobic and transphobic and a part of the brand of politics rooted in misinformation and hate. Our school communities are concerned that trustees are overstepping their role in a way that will cause harm to staff and students.”

“As a former school social worker and ally, I oppose the discrimination of 2SLGBTQ+ staff and students. This motion is not in line with the board’s own by-laws, with ministry values, and is part of a larger erosion of democracy in our school boards.”
