Schreiner highlights plan to build 2 million homes at Guelph Realtors Debate
February 21, 2025
GUELPH — Mike Schreiner highlighted the Ontario Greens’ plan to build 2 million homes at the One Point Association of Realtors Guelph All Candidates Debate.
“Today’s debate underscored the extent to which people in our communities are worried about the cost-of-living and finding an affordable home,” said Schreiner. “And they’re right to be worried because for the past 7 years Doug Ford has failed to take action on housing. Under Doug Ford, housing starts are at an all-time low, and housing costs are at an all-time high.
“Ontario Greens are committed to building 2 million homes by removing red-tape, and fees and taxes that slow-down the building of new homes. Here’s how we’ll do it:
- Build 2 million homes in a variety of innovative forms within urban boundaries over the next 10 years.
- Legalize fourplexes and four storeys as-of-right within existing urban boundaries province-wide, and six-plexes in cities with populations over 500,000.
- Cut red tape and change planning laws to ensure various building types can be built along main streets, transit stations and corridors, public lands, surplus commercial lands, and residential neighbourhoods
- Make homes affordable for homebuyers by removing development charges on homes, condos and apartment units built under 2000 sq ft within urban boundaries. Implement an Affordable Community Fund to reimburse municipalities for lost revenue.
- Allow single family dwellings to be divided into multiple condominium units to create more attainable home ownership opportunities within existing neighbourhoods.”
