Clancy and Schreiner announce Ontario Greens’ Plan to Support Renters as Clancy receives local endorsement
February 20, 2025
KITCHENER — Ontario Greens’ Leader Mike Schreiner joined Deputy Leader and Kitchener Centre candidate Aislinn Clancy to announce the Ontario Greens’ Plan to Support Renters. They were joined by representatives from A Better Tent City and a Kitchener Centre constituent with lived experience with renovictions.
“Aislinn has helped my family and many others fight to save our affordable housing. As MPP she stood up for housing justice and for tenants in Kitchener,” said affordable housing advocate Nadine Green from A Better Tent City who has endorsed Clancy for re-election.
“Right now, our rental system is broken,” said Clancy. “People in Ontario deserve a place to call home, somewhere they can feel safe and secure. But that’s not possible as long as renters are being gouged on rent, and subjected to unfair rent hikes and unlawful evictions.”
“Many of the people who are experiencing homelessness today have been affected by the gaps in our tenant protections. The people who live at a Better Tent City now experience housing stability that helps them live healthy lives. Our plan will keep housing affordable for renters and help you feel secure in your home for as long as you want to live there.”
“Aislinn is a fearless trailblazer when it comes to leading the fight to make housing more affordable for people in Kitchener and across our province” said Schreiner. “Her Bill, the Keeping People Housed Act, was the foundation for our plan to protect renters as we work to increase our affordable housing supply. Unfortunately Doug Ford’s Conservatives said NO to this important Bill. Greens will keep putting forward real, impactful solutions to the housing crisis.”
Our Plan to Support Renters will:
- Expand rent control to all buildings, including those built after 2018
- Reform the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) to cut wait times to protect both landlords and tenants from bad actors
- Place a moratorium on Above Guideline Rent Increases to protect renters from unfair and unexpected rent hikes
- Strengthen rules and penalties for renovictions and bad faith evictions
- Reinstate vacancy control to limit rent increases between tenancies”
