Ontario Greens announce Small Business Support Plan

February 19, 2025

GEORGETOWN — Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner announced the party’s Small Business Support Plan alongside Wellington-Halton Hills Green candidate Bronwynne Wilton at a campaign stop in Georgetown.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our communities,” said Schreiner. “But for far too long, they’ve been pushed out of our communities by red tape and unfair legislation that favours the Walmarts and Amazons of the world. It’s time to change that.”

“As a small business owner myself, I know the difference it can make to have local leaders who are in your corner,” said Wilton. “Ontario Greens’ plan will give our small businesses the tools they need to build, grow and turn a profit.”

“A strong small business sector is good for all of us,” said Schreiner. “But it doesn’t just happen by accident. We need to create the conditions for them to survive and thrive so they can continue enriching our communities and our main streets.

“Doug Ford has always favoured big corporations like Therme Spa and big box stores – but Ontario Greens have a plan to help small businesses thrive.”

Ontario Greens Small Business Support Plan would:

  • Reduce taxes by increasing the Employer Health Tax exemption to $1.5 million for small businesses;
  • Amend zoning rules to allow for small businesses such as corner stores and cafes to open within residential neighbourhoods;
  • Implement a Commercial Renter’s Bill of Rights and create standardised leases to provide small businesses with stability and continuity;
  • Work with insurance providers to develop an affordable commercial insurance program for small businesses; and
  • Undertake a review of regulations in order to remove red tape and costs that disproportionately affect small businesses.
