OSSTF and ETFO locals endorse Matt Richter as Mike Schreiner makes education announcement in Parry Sound-Muskoka

February 17, 2025

HUNTSVILLE — Ontario Greens Deputy Leader and candidate for Parry Sound-Muskoka Matt Richter received endorsements from three teachers’ union locals – Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) Near North, and Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) locals Near North and Trillium Lakelands.

Representatives Rob Hammond (ETFO Near North) and Parker Robinson (OSSTF Near North) joined Richter and party leader Mike Schreiner for an education announcement at Richter’s Huntsville office.

“We believe that Matt and the Green Party have the best interests of educators in Ontario,”  said Hammond. “Matt is very well-versed not only in education, but also our economy, housing and healthcare. We think that Greens would be the best representatives of us at Queen’s Park.”

“I’m honoured by the trust placed in me by my fellow educators,” said Richter. “As a teacher and a parent, I’m committed to building a better Ontario for our children and future generations. I look forward to working closely with OSSTF and ETFO as MPP for Parry Sound-Muskoka to improve access to quality education in rural communities and across our province.”

“This endorsement is a reflection of Matt’s commitment to working with his local community to build a better future for our kids and future generations,” said Schreiner. “He understands what needs to be done to improve the quality of education in towns and rural Ontario and he’ll stop at nothing to ensure that our education plan meets the needs of parents, educators, and students across the province.

“That’s why I’m announcing today that Ontario Greens are committed to investing in our kids, educators and education system by:

  • Increasing per-student funding by $1,500 to make up for the $3.1 billion in cuts by the Ford government since 2018.
  • Reducing class sizes and providing student supports in classrooms and schools where they are needed,
  • Fixing the repair backlog for Ontario public schools and working in consultation with school boards to adopt a Standard of Good Repair.”
