Schreiner and Johnson highlight Ontario Greens’ solutions to the ‘crisis of caring’ in Cambridge

February 10, 2025

CAMBRIDGE — Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner was in Cambridge today alongside local candidate Carla Johnson to highlight the party’s solutions to the crisis of caring facing Cambridge and Ontario.

“There is a crisis of caring across Ontario,” said Schreiner. “Doug Ford has abandoned the people of Ontario, especially those who are in the most vulnerable situations. Especially when it comes to ensuring people have a safe, affordable place to call home – he simply just doesn’t care.”

There are currently over 80,000 people experiencing homelessness across the province – a jarring figure that is up 25% since just 2022.

“The housing affordability and homelessness crisis is at a breaking point here in Cambridge,” said Ontario Greens Cambridge candidate and WRDSB Trustee Carla Johnson. “People are left out to sleep in the cold because of political inaction. It is as heartbreaking as it is frustrating.”

Johnson and Schreiner toured the new YWCA shelter in Cambridge that is currently under construction and close to completion. It will be the first shelter in the region dedicated to women experiencing homelessness, and will have wraparound supports on site.

“Housing is a human right and these are the kinds of local solutions we need to address the crisis of caring facing our communities, and as a strong local leader, the kind of solutions I know Carla will implement here in Cambridge as MPP.”

“Ontario Greens are committed to ensuring everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home, including increasing annual funding for women’s shelters, transitional and supportive housing, and building 310,000 affordable homes.”

Tomorrow, Schreiner is in Kitchener Centre to support the launch of Deputy Leader Aislinn Clancy’s 5 Point Plan for her community.
