Schreiner calls for immediate response to Ontario’s “crisis of caring” at the Ontario Health Coalition’s Annual Assembly

January 27, 2025

TORONTO — Ontario Greens’ leader Mike Schreiner addressed the Ontario Health Coalition’s Annual Assembly this afternoon, discussing the crisis of caring affecting the province after years of Doug Ford’s negligence, and highlighting the Greens’ solutions for a more caring Ontario.

“There is no excuse that can justify the current state of health care access in our province,” Schreiner said. “After seven years under Doug Ford, our healthcare system is understaffed and underfunded. Emergency rooms are overflowing, and people are lining up overnight to register with a family doctor. And Doug Ford’s solution? Make it worse with privatization.

“We need a real plan to take care of people in our communities – one that puts people before private profits. We need a government that cares.” Schreiner noted that Ontario’s healthcare system is the lowest funded per-capita of any province.

The Ontario Greens’ plan includes hiring thousands of doctors and nurse practitioners to ensure everyone in the province can access primary healthcare when and where they need it, reversing privatization in the health care system, harmonizing wages for health care workers to increase staff capacity, and increasing provincial funding for hospitals and rural health teams.

“More needs to be done to support the doctors, nurses, PSWs, frontline healthcare workers and hospitals we depend on every day to care for our loved ones and protect the health of our communities,” said Schreiner.
