Home retrofits help Ontarians save money. But we need to go further.
January 8, 2025
QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to the Ford government’s Home Renovation Savings Program announcement.
“I’m glad that six years after they cancelled energy efficiency programs, the Ford government is finally listening to Ontario Greens’ call to help people and small businesses save money by saving energy.
It’s unfortunate that people have had to wait six long years for this government to act because home retrofits like heat pumps, solar panels or even just new windows and doors help Ontarians save money every single day.
Given the high cost of living that’s pinching Ontarians across the province, we call on the government to be more ambitious in helping people and small businesses save on energy.
This government spends over $7 billion every year subsidizing electricity bills in a way that disproportionately benefits the wealthiest. Greens would focus these subsidies on low- and middle-income households to provide more funding for retrofit programs so that more people and businesses can save money now and to implement a free heat pump program like the one in PEI.
I want to remind the government that people need affordability relief today. That is why the Ford government needs to inject more ambition into this program in order to get Ontarians maximum savings.”
