Clancy tables motion to create more childcare spaces
December 3, 2024
QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens Deputy Leader and MPP for Kitchener Centre Aislinn Clancy has tabled a motion calling on the Ford government to create more affordable childcare spaces by increasing wages for childcare workers and increasing funding to ensure providers can pay fair wages while maintaining participation in the $10-a-day program.
“When I knock on doors in Kitchener, I’m constantly hearing about the lack of affordable childcare spaces in our community,” said Clancy.
“Every day, I hear from parents who are having to leave their jobs so they can stay home and take care of their kids, and it’s just not fair.”
Since 2022, Waterloo Region has seen a 115 percent increase in demand for childcare spaces, resulting in a waitlist of over 9,000 kids. The region is regularly referred to as a childcare desert.
“Paying our workers fairly is so important if we want to bring more staff into the sector and increase the number of spaces available to families in our communities.
“This is a simple but meaningful action we could take today that would help so many families – not just in Kitchener, but all across the province.”
