Schreiner to Ford: Open up the 407 today

QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to the Premier’s comments about the possibility of using Highway 407 to alleviate gridlock on the 401.

“I’m glad that the Premier is waking up to the reality that we need gridlock solutions today – not 20 years down the road.

Selling off Highway 407 was one of the worst deals in Ontario’s history. Right now, people are sitting on the 401 for hours while the 407 sits empty just a few kilometres away.

The Ford government can start repairing the damage today by subsidizing tolls for trucks on the 407, freeing up space for cars on the 401 at a fraction of what it would cost to build any new highway – a solution Ontario Greens were the first party to call for.

It’s an obvious solution that would immediately ease 401 traffic, and if the Premier wants to seriously tackle gridlock in this province he should implement it immediately.”
