Clancy co-sponsors bill to declare October 18 Persons Day

October 18, 2024

QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens Deputy Leader Aislinn Clancy has co-sponsored a cross-partisan bill to declare October 18 Persons Day alongside MPPs Mary-Margaret McMahon and Kristyn Wong-Tam.

“On this day in 1929, five women – Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Irene Parlby and Nellie McClung – succeeded in having women included in the legal definition of “persons.”

This was a landmark moment in the fight for women’s equality in Canada. Our hope is that by proclaiming October 18 as Persons Day in Ontario, we can continue to foster women’s and gender-diverse leadership in political life and beyond.

I’m grateful to my colleagues MPPs McMahon and Wong-Tam for working across party lines to table this bill together, and I hope to see it pass with all-party support in the Legislature.”
