Subsidizing truck tolls on 407 could ease gridlock today

QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to Doug Ford’s claim that buying back Highway 407 is an option on the table for reducing gridlock on 400-series highways.

“The Conservatives’ move to sell off Highway 407 was one of the worst financial decisions in Ontario history. As a result, gridlock on Highway 401 has become unbearable while the 407 sits so empty you could land a plane on it.

The Ford government can start reversing the damage today by subsidizing tolls for trucks on the 407, freeing up space for cars on the 401 at a fraction of what it would cost to build any new highway – a solution Ontario Greens have repeatedly called for.

It’s an obvious solution that would immediately ease 401 gridlock, and that the Premier hasn’t implemented it yet just shows that he doesn’t have a serious plan.”
