Ford government’s fiscal irresponsibility on full display

QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to the 2023-24 Public Accounts and news that the provincial government spent $6.7 billion over the past two years on Bill 124 backpay.

“Every day, this government’s carelessness is leaving ordinary Ontarians behind.

The Conservatives have now spent $6.7 billion on backpay to healthcare and education workers whose wages they unconstitutionally capped.

If this government can find those billions of dollars now, what prevented them from just paying our teachers and nurses fairly in the first place?

It’s an utter embarrassment that could have been avoided entirely if it weren’t for this government’s total lack of fiscal responsibility. It’s just the latest in a long list of costly decisions to Ontarians.

Ontario Greens will continue to fight for a government that says yes to education, yes to public healthcare, and yes to a future our kids can believe in.”
