Ford renewables U-turn has further to go

August 28, 2024

QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens leader Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to Minister Lecce’s announcement that the government’s latest round of energy procurement will be “technology agnostic” and could include fossil gas or renewables.

“While I’m glad to see that the Ford government has finally reversed its archaic, ideological anti-renewables stance, it has a lot further to go if it wants to undo the years of damage its fossil gas obsession has caused.

Renewables are cheaper, cleaner and make far more economic sense than fossil gas. Other countries and provinces are already reaping the benefits of their clean energy investments, with the United States’ renewable energy investments netting $249 billion in climate and health benefits in just three years.

Doling out more money to fossil gas giants to keep Ontarians hooked on gas is part of the Ford government’s commitment to enriching wealthy, well-connected insiders at the expense of everyone else.

Any future that includes fossil gas expansion is not a future that puts Ontarians first. These are facts, and any responsible government would do well to pay attention to them.”
