Housing starts flatline under Ford government

August 14, 2024

QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to the release of the Financial Accountability Office’s latest economic monitor, which shows that Ontario's housing starts in 2024 Q2 were just 19,300.

“Once again, the Ford government is standing in the way of Ontario’s housing progress.

Previous FAO data showed that in order to reach its target of 1.5 million homes by 2031, Ontario would need to build an average of 38,600 units each quarter. The Ford government hasn’t hit that target even once.

It’s been shown time and time again that legalizing gentle density is the cheapest and fastest way to build more homes in existing neighbourhoods – and yet our Premier has repeatedly railed against fourplexes and sided with NIMBYism.

Ontarians need a government that’s ready to implement bold solutions to build more homes people can afford in the communities they know and love. If the Ford government’s not willing to do that, they need to get out of the way.”
