Greens table motion to protect prime Wilmot farmland
April 23, 2024
QUEEN'S PARK — Today, Ontario Greens Deputy Leader Aislinn Clancy tabled a motion calling on the Ford government to permanently protect Ontario’s prime farmland, including by immediately halting plans to expropriate 770 acres of farmland in Wilmott and reversing urban boundary changes in the Waterloo region that put nearly 7,000 acres of land at risk of development.
“We are here today to call on the Ford government to protect prime farmland and responsible regional planning,” said Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner.
“From the beginning, the Wilmot land assembly process has lacked transparency and left farmers in the dark,” said Schreiner. “Now, they are at risk of losing their lands, livelihoods and businesses – it’s just not right.”
“We know this problem is bigger than 770 acres,” said Clancy. “The Ford government is determined to use every chance it has to impose expensive sprawl onto communities who have been clear that they don’t want it.”
“Greens will continue working across party lines to fight back against forced boundary expansions and protect prime farmland – in Wilmot, and all across the province – for generations to come.”
