Schreiner: Ford government admits defeat on housing
April 15, 2024
QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to the Ford government’s proposed housing legislation.
“With this bill, the Ford government is effectively admitting defeat after five years of housing failures.
Instead of taking big and bold leadership to build more homes that people can afford, they’re tinkering around the edges and shifting responsibility onto municipalities and post-secondary institutions.
They’re trying to put out a forest fire with a garden hose.
Rather than throwing their hands up and walking away, Greens call on the Ford government to implement the bold housing solutions we have been putting forward for years, including:
- Legalizing gentle density by allowing fourplexes and four-story apartments in all neighbourhoods, and six to 11 stories on major streets;
- Protecting renters by reimplementing rent and vacancy control and cracking down on illegal evictions;
- Building hundreds of thousands affordable and supportive community rental homes; and
- Getting speculation out of the housing market.”
