Ford government could correct toll failures by subsidizing trucks on Highway 407
March 5, 2024
QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens Deputy Leader and MPP for Kitchener Centre Aislinn Clancy released the following statement in response to news that the Ford government proposed to remove tolls from non-existent highways without waiting for the results of their own study on the use of road tolls in the province.
“It’s no surprise that the Ford government ploughed ahead with the crown jewel in their Get It Done Wrong Act – removing tolls from non-existent highways – without bothering to wait for the results of their own study on the very same topic.
Given their track record, it’s also no surprise that this government has repeatedly failed to take action on the one toll that would actually make a difference in Ontarians’ everyday lives.
By subsidizing tolls for trucks on Highway 407, the Ford government could reduce congestion today and create $6 billion in savings by scrapping the super-polluting Highway 413.
Not only would this reduce traffic on Highway 401, it would also conserve 2,000 acres of prime farmland and 400 acres of Greenbelt land that would be destroyed by the speculator-friendly Highway 413.
But yesterday, we saw this government once again say no to a common-sense solution that’s good for the climate, good for reducing gridlock, and good for our wallets. ”
