Childcare workers and ECEs are worth more

October 17, 2023

QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens leader and MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner released the following statement to mark Childcare Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day.

“On Childcare Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day, I am proud to stand alongside so many childcare workers, unions, school boards, parents and allies to say that childcare workers are worth more.

These are the people who work tirelessly to care for our children and our families, even in the face of unprecedented challenges. They deserve to be treated with respect, dignity and fairness.

Instead, the Ford government has locked them into too-low wages that make it near impossible to live in the communities they work in.

This is harmful to workers and families across the province, and it sets all of us back in our attempts to build a more equitable and caring society.

Affordable childcare is life-changing for so many Ontario families. But in order to guarantee that it’s accessible to all, we need to attract and retain ECEs and childcare workers with fair wages and working conditions.

Ontario Greens are committed to working with advocates and allies to make this vision a reality.”
