Statement on Canada Day

GUELPH — Ontario Greens leader and MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner released the following statement to mark Canada Day.

“Canada Day is an opportunity to celebrate the things that make our country great – vibrant, diverse communities, a rich natural heritage, local food and farming, and so much more.

It’s also a time for reflection, education and action. A chance to reckon with the harms of the past and repair the wrongs of the present so that we can build a better Ontario and Canada for generations to come.

Over the past several years, the discovery of unmarked graves at the sites of former residential schools across the country has been a disturbing reminder of our past and present reality of colonialism and systemic racism.

Ontario Greens are committed to upholding the values that make our province and our country strong – inclusion, acceptance, and strength in diversity.

As we continue down this path, we must also strive to embrace the Seventh Generation Principle – committing ourselves to making decisions today that will create the type of province and future we want for the next seven generations.

Decisions that lead us toward a better future for people and planet alike.

On Canada Day and every day, let’s continue working together to build strong, caring communities where everyone can feel safe and welcome.”
