Ford’s Ontario Place ploy will cut the Science Centre in half

GUELPH — Ontario Greens leader and MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to reports that the proposed Science Centre building at Ontario Place is expected to be half of the size of the current building.

“All along, we’ve known that something doesn’t add up when it comes to the Premier’s slapdash ploy to move the Science Centre to Ontario Place.

Now, as the province ploughs ahead without proper consultation, the concerns voiced by so many community advocates turn out to be dead on.

There is simply no way that the Science Centre can lose half its floor plan and maintain the breadth of programming it’s become known for.

If the Ford government had prioritized community engagement before barging ahead with this head-in-the sand scheme, maybe they would understand its consequences.

The communities surrounding Don Mills shouldn’t have to lose an important public attraction and educational space.

And we can’t let this damage-control tactic distract us from the government’s real agenda: sell off public assets to serve a handful of well-connected corporations, and leave the people of Ontario to foot the bill.”
