Ford’s housing failures are shortchanging municipalities

April 26, 2023

QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens leader and MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to reports that Toronto's affordable housing plan could stall if the Ford government does not fill the gap created by Bill 23.

“From the start, we’ve known that Bill 23 will make it harder to build the homes we need.

And now, we have yet another report showing that the Ford government is continuing to leave municipalities high and dry – impeding their ability to build homes people can actually afford in communities they want to live in.

Municipalities want to build affordable, connected communities. But in order to succeed, they need this government to step in and repair the damage that their own poor housing policies have caused.

Bottom line: the Ford government must provide support to make municipalities whole in the wake of Bill 23.

And they also need to provide support for the creation of deeply affordable and supportive housing – so that everyone in our province can have a safe and affordable place to live.

Municipalities know what their residents need. They know what they need to do in order to make housing more affordable and more accessible. But they cannot do it alone.

As Ontario’s Premier, Doug Ford should be listening to local leaders. And local leaders have been clear: without proper funding, Ford’s plan is built to fail.”
