Clean energy credits won’t solve the climate crisis
March 29, 2023
QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens leader and MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to the launch of the Ford government’s voluntary clean energy credit registry.
“The voluntary clean energy credit registry that appeared in the Ford government’s budget is nothing more than a greenwashing manoeuvre designed to distract us from their abysmal track record on climate action.
These credit registries don’t decrease emissions. They allow companies to continue polluting by buying credits from Ontarios’s clean energy grid.
This shell game will likely undermine the competitive advantage that Ontario’s clean grid provides and slow down the decarbonization of electricity grids in other places.
Greenwashing schemes like this risk Ontario losing out while the rest of the world rapidly embraces renewable energy solutions and investments in the new climate economy.
Ontario needs serious leadership and strategic investments from the government if we are going to secure jobs and investment in the climate economy.
But once again, we’re seeing the government pass the buck on real climate action.
Ontario Greens will keep holding the government to account to deliver real climate solutions that help people save money by saving energy and that generate jobs and prosperity for Ontario.”
