Ford government is desperate and out of ideas on the healthcare crisis

QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner today released the following statement in response to the Ford government's decision to fast-track the “More Beds Better Care Act”“The Ford government is failing to address the healthcare crisis Ontario faces.

And it’s outrageous for the government to ride roughshod over the objections of seniors advocates, Greens and the other opposition parties to slam through its unpopular Bill 7 without public committee hearings.

This legislation has been widely criticized by healthcare organizations and seniors’ advocates for its plan to pressure elders to move from hospital to a long-term care home without their consent.

The government should hear these concerns in the appropriate setting – a public committee hearing held before MPPs vote on the bill.

Instead, Doug Ford has decided to skip this important step which provides an opportunity to amend the bill in ways that address the public’s concerns.

The government has a responsibility to listen to and respond to people’s concerns in public where people can hold them accountable.

The fact that they won’t indicates that what they are proposing is indefensible.”
