Ontario must declare intimate partner violence an epidemic

QUEEN'S PARK — Mike Schreiner made the following statement in response to the recent inquest jury findings on intimate partner violence:

“Intimate partner violence is rampant across Canada and Ontario, and we need to call it what it is — an epidemic.

This is the first of 86 jury recommendations from the femicide case that saw the tragic murders of Carol Culleton, Anastasia Kuzyk and Nathalie Warmerdam seven years ago.

Unfortunately, we have seen these types of recommendations before, and yet here we are with not enough being acted on.

I’m calling on the Ford government to immediately take action by formally declaring intimate partner violence an epidemic, establishing an independent Intimate Partner Violence Commission, and committing to making all 86 recommendations a priority in the next provincial parliament.”
