Doug Ford is putting profits before care in LTC

TORONTO — Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner made the following statement in response to reports that more than half of the approximately 60,000 new and redeveloped beds in the government's plan are set to go to private, for-profit companies - many of which had far higher death rates throughout the COVID-19 pandemic:

“It’s outrageous and irresponsible that Doug Ford is spending billions of tax dollars rewarding the for-profit LTC chains that failed seniors during the pandemic.

Our loved ones deserve better.

Ford’s support for for-profit LTC chains will lock in the exact model of care that failed so tragically during the pandemic.

The humanitarian crisis that unfolded in LTC homes across Ontario was horrific and we must do everything possible to ensure something like that never happens again.

We need to build a more caring Ontario where elders are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

Greens are committed to putting care before profits and phasing out for-profit LTC homes.”
