Taxpayers on the hook for wealthy families’ energy bills

February 16, 2022

Today’s report makes it abundantly clear: the government continues to waste billions on energy subsidies that disproportionately benefit wealthy Ontarians.

QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to today’s report from the Financial Accountability Office (FAO):

“Today’s report makes it abundantly clear: the government continues to waste billions on energy subsidies that disproportionately benefit wealthy Ontarians.

It’s wasteful and unfair.

Of the estimated $78 billion that will subsidize households over the next 20 years, only 21% of the money will go towards low- and medium-income families.

Programs should be targeted to those who need the relief the most — lower income individuals and families and people in rural areas and on First Nations reserves.

Ontario Greens will reallocate the billions of dollars into a transformative green building and retrofit program that will help all Ontarians save money on their energy bills, create good jobs and address the climate emergency.”
