Ford’s paid sick days bill falls short of what workers need

April 29, 2021

Three paid sick days is still insufficient in protecting Ontario's workers, but a quarter loaf is better than no loaf.

QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement on the paid sick days bill that passed this afternoon:

“I did not block the expedited passage of the government’s paid sick days bill because a quarter loaf is better than no loaf.

But Ford’s sick leave program is not the best in North America and it falls far short of what workers need.

Three paid sick days is insufficient, and it is not the 10 days scientists and health experts are calling for.

I will continue to fight for 10 paid sick days that are permanent, seamless and accessible to all workers including gig workers. This pandemic has shown that paid sick leave benefits all Ontarians, because safe workplaces lead to healthier communities.

It’s what Ontarians need.”
