Ford acting like pandemic is over puts people at risk

March 26, 2021

Carding will not stop the spread of COVID-19. It will disproportionately affect people of colour and those in the most vulnerable situations.

QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to the recent spike in COVID cases and ICU admissions:

“Ford must not be reading the news, because he’s acting like COVID-19 is over with his most recent budget.

There have been well over 2,000 cases for two days in a row, and over 400 Ontarians are in ICUs with COVID.

Recent data from the Science Table shows that variants increase the risk of death and hospitalization by 60%, and the risk of ICU admission by 100%.

Ontarians need immediate support to weather the third wave.

Ford’s budget contained nothing to make workplaces safer. We need paid sick days and paid leave so essential workers can get vaccinated. Safe workplaces are vital to containing spread and avoiding another lockdown.

If Ford fails to take decisive action now, we risk seeing more outbreaks and deaths.

Premier Ford needs to face reality, put people’s safety first and implement paid sick days.”
