Ford government disrespects democratic process

QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement after the government called legislation for debate without notice to the opposition:

“I’ve been proud of the way all parties have quarantined partisanship to put people first during the COVID crisis.

Unfortunately, that ended today when the government called non-COVID related bills for debate without notice.

It disrespects the people of Ontario to debate such bills at a time when citizens are preoccupied with the pandemic and when opposition MPPs are not provided the time to consult them.

This is simply an underhanded move to pull during a state of emergency.

It’s disappointing that the government would play these games when they could be focusing their efforts on the crisis in long term care homes or developing a province wide testing strategy.”
