Schreiner statement on Basic Income report

Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to a report showing how Canada could provide a Basic Income Guarantee of $22,000:

“I thank Basic Income advocates and experts for keeping this conversation alive even after the Ford government senselessly cancelled Ontario’s basic income pilot.

This report adds meat to the bones of the basic income discussion, showing there are pathways to eliminate poverty if the political will exists.

In our rapidly changing world of precarious employment, a basic income gives people the financial security they need to re-train, open a business or simply make ends meet.

If the Premier would reverse tax cuts for the wealthy and stop selling our resources at the lowest rates in the country, we could make a Basic Income work in Ontario.

Political leaders must have the courage to establish fiscal priorities that will end poverty.”
