Schreiner responds to reversal of future Legal Aid cuts
December 11, 2019
“The government is playing with people’s lives when it cuts first and thinks later.
This endless back-and-forth of cuts that are imposed without consultation and then partially pulled back must stop.
It throws our public services into chaos, which ultimately hurts the most vulnerable.
The reversal of future cuts to Legal Aid is cold comfort to the low-income Ontarians, immigrants, and refugees who have already lost access to legal representation.
The responsible action would be to fully restore the $133 million funding cut levelled at Legal Aid this year, which forced them to lay off staff and halt projects.
Depriving low-income people of access to justice only worsens the disparity between those who can afford to stand up for their rights and those who cannot.”
