Return to normal class sizes, says Schreiner

October 24, 2019

“Removing the cap on class sizes and increasing current class size ratios will damage the quality of education.

The dramatic class size increase from 22 to 28 should have never been considered in the first place because it will do serious harm to our schools.

This year already, there are over 2,800 fewer teachers in the classroom than under the previous teacher-student ratios, forcing students to struggle with packed classrooms and cancelled courses.

Pulling back on average class sizes is an admission from the government that they made a mistake.

I want to thank teachers, staff, students, families and all Ontarians who have been standing up for our public education system.

Now the government must listen to their concerns.

We know the Premier has manufactured a deficit crisis, inflating the numbers to justify these cuts.

He should return to normal class sizes and commit to education funding that is consistent with inflation and growing enrolment.”
