We need a plan to support adults with autism
October 16, 2019
Autism doesn’t end at 18.
It is a lifelong condition and adults with autism need ongoing support.
While the Ford government has started to undo the damage of its failed autism plan for children, it has callously cut off funding for adults with court ordered funding for autism services.
I stand with these families who are suing the government for negligence and demanding a plan to support adults with severe autism who require 24 hour care.
I cannot imagine the struggle they face to fill the massive gap left by the government.
It is wrong to treat people with severe developmental disabilities as a line items on a budget.
And it is unconscionable to cut off services to families without a transition plan.
The Ford government must restore funding for these families and recognize our collective responsibility to care for people with autism throughout their life.
