Beer promises could fail to launch
April 18, 2019
TORONTO — Mike Schreiner released the following statement about potential big penalties for selling beer in convenience stores:
“The Premier needs to look before he leaps, think before he acts.
He made a big splashy announcement about selling beer in convenience stores with no plan for follow through.
This is why campaign slogans rarely make good policy, especially with a Premier who doesn’t worry about how to actually deliver on his promises.
If we are going to expand alcohol sales to corner stores, then let’s do it the right way, without incurring millions in penalties. And above all, let’s liberate local beer and support craft and artisan producers.
We should be looking at alternatives like stand-alone craft beer stores similar to the Wine Rack where artisan producers can grow their markets.
The Premier wants credit for slogans and stickers, but he should give more thought to the policy behind the label.”
