Minister’s silence on gender issues is wrong
February 28, 2019
TORONTO — Mike Schreiner made the following statement regarding the Minister of Education's refusal to commit to including gender issues in the new sex-ed curriculum:
“We owe it to our children to create safe and inclusive learning environments where students of all genders feel welcome. For the Minister of Education to waffle on the teaching of gender identity issues in the new curriculum the day after Pink Shirt Day is simply wrong.
Yesterday the Minister had plenty to say about ending bullying in our schools, but when it came time to commit to real action today, she was silent. It’s disappointing, and I call on the Minister to bring forward a curriculum that is inclusive and supports students of all gender identities.
The court’s decision today is disappointing, but it doesn’t change the court of public opinion, which stands firmly behind teaching gender diversity in schools. Ontario needs a curriculum that helps children to navigate complex issues like consent and online safety while making sure we create safe spaces for everyone.
I sincerely hope the Ford government stops playing footsie with social conservatives who refuse to accept gender diversity. They cannot be allowed to drive education decisions that will ultimately harm our children. We all need to stand against homophobia and transphobia. ”
