Minister’s vague statement could spell trouble for health care
October 19, 2018
TORONTO — Green Party of Ontario leader and Guelph MPP, Mike Schreiner, issued the following statement on news the PC government is restructuring the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care:
“The Minister and Premier need to be honest with people about how they plan to restructure health care.
The last time the government did something unexpected, it created chaos in the Toronto elections and a threat to charter rights. People deserve an explanation of what this mysterious restructuring actually means for them and their family.
A vague statement alluding to drastic changes in the province’s biggest public service does not bode well. Responsible, productive governments do not rule by surprise.
I expect Minister Elliot to clarify these changes. What divisions have been merged and streamlined? How many jobs have been lost? And how exactly will this help solve the hallway healthcare crisis?
I am worried this announcement is simply a cover for cuts because Ford’s solution to everything since being elected has been to cut, cancel and repeal.
Let me be clear: the Green Party of Ontario also wants to make our healthcare system more efficient and effective. But this won’t be achieved by eliminating front-line care.”
