Statement in response to the Auditor General's report

Green Party of Ontario leader Mike Schreiner issued the following statement in response to the Auditor General’s Report:

“Premier Wynne’s electricity subsidy is the most expensive band aid in Ontario’s history. This cynical attempt to buy votes means every person in Ontario and our kids will be left to pick up the Premier’s tab after next year’s election.

Both the Financial Accountability Officer and now the Auditor General have confirmed that the Liberals’ electricity pricing scheme is a financial disaster for Ontario.

Not only is this subsidy going to cost us billions, this scheme is a tax cut for the rich. The structure means the more electricity you consume the bigger your discount.

Instead, we should be targeting electricity rate relief for those who need it the most, not the wealthy who consume the most.

The Liberal scheme is good for bankers and bondholders. It is bad for the people of Ontario.

It is time to end these self-serving political games that the three status quo parties at Queen’s Park play. It is time to put people first, before partisan self-interest and expensive political games.”
